Tony Blair has announced that the dilapidated and outdated facilities at Stonehenge are to be totally rebuilt and modernized as a farewell gesture to the nation.
‘It is a disgrace that a World Heritage Site visited by tourists from all over the world hasn’t been refurbished or modernized for around 3500 years,’ said the Prime Minister unveiling the blueprint for ‘a twenty-first century henge’. The plans include new road and rail access, VIP boxes, conference facilities, a retractable weatherproof roof, a ‘Neolithic’ theme restaurant, serving traditional bronze age refreshments and a special luxury ‘sunrise viewing gallery’ for the more discerning druid.
The monument on Salisbury Plain was first built around 5000 years ago and there were several modifications over the next 1500 years but the Stonehenge that we see today is the final stage that was completed about 3500 years ago. Archaeologists from around the world have condemned the modernization proposals as an ‘act of unmitigated vandalism’ but Number 10 said that the Prime Minister always heard the same old objections whenever he attempted to modernize Britain’s outdated institutions.
‘This will be the most ambitions high profile building project that the PM has undertaken, following the successful construction of the Scottish Parliament, the Millennium Dome and the rebuilding of Wembley Stadium, which mark just part of the Prime Minister’s wonderful legacy to Great Britain.’
Spritiualists and druids had planned a immediate demonstration at Stonehenge but ended up at the wrong location at the wrong time. ‘What did you expect?’ said one. ‘That’s what happens when the ley-lines are run by Railtrack.’
