I really need some help with making videos before I cry. I have spent the best part of two days trying to create videos and things are not going at all well.
I have a Kodak digital camera M1033 that videos with sound. The format of the video is .mov
Unfortunately Windows Movie Maker (WMM) doesn’t recognise .mov so I have to upload and then convert the video to something else. The popular choice seems to be .avi – which WMM accepts for editing.
I have now used two freeware progs to convert my .mov to .avi RAD Video Tools and FREE MOV 2 AVI
Both progs only work when they feel like it – it seems. When they do convert to .avi (Rad Tools takes 25 mins to convert 7 mins of video! – FREE takes seconds but tells me it has already converted when it hasn’t) WMM won’t let me import them so that I can start editing. I get an error message saying ‘[file.avi] cannot be imported’. No reason as to why at all.
I have downloaded up to date versions of QuickTime to accept the codec or something, I forget now, my head is spinning.
I’m not sure where the problem is to be honest as the problem seems to shift around.
Windows Media Player is refusing to play the freshly converted .avi files OR it will play them but only the sound and no picture
Two days ago I was able to upload, convert, import and edit with no problems at all with trial video of my dogs (approx 1 min 20 secs). Yesterday and today with longer video (7 mins) I can’t.
What I don’t need is loads of links to stuff I can find on the net myself. What I do need is someone who has already figured out this process and can help me troubleshoot what the problems are so I can stop crying and get some video produced. :gcry
Thank you in hopeful anticipation My Saviour!

January 3, 2009 at 2:51 pm #24677PonygirlMemberI had all of these problems when I brought my camcorder last year, and in the end I got soooo frustrated that I gave up! I just ended up buying a dvd recorder so that I can burn dvds directly from my camcorder without uploading them on my computer. Let me know if you manage to figure it all out, it really shouldn’t be so hard!
January 3, 2009 at 3:20 pm #24678SerenaMemberGenerally speaking free software for videos are very limited.
It sounds like you need Quick Time Pro for Window.
Its not free but it is reasonable. This will allow you to edit, resize, play etc…http://store.apple.com/us/product/D3381Z/A
Give me a shout if you need more info xx

January 3, 2009 at 4:48 pm #24680SerenaMemberOps! I have seen them now!!
I love QTP! I have been using it for years but on a mac.. maybe is not quite as refined for PC’s..
If your camera is calling specifically for Quick Time you might have a problem tho 🙁
Plug- ins wont’ do it m’fraid, you will eventually need to purchase a licensed software of some kind ….
Have u had a shop around?January 4, 2009 at 7:29 am #24685Mr EMember.movs are a pain to work with but I have successfully converted and edited them using freeware but not that which you are using, so I am unsure whether my assistance meets your acceptance criteria 🙂
However, the program I use is MPEG Streamclip. It is a free video converter, player and editor for Mac and Windows. It converts .mov to avi, dv or mpeg-4 quickly and reliably. You can use it for basic editing – cut, split, join etc – and if that is sufficient then you can resave the video as a .mov without conversion. If you need more advanced editing then Windows Movie Maker imports the converted avi files with no problem.
Plan your work to minimize conversion and recompression as every time you do so the video quality diminishes.
MPEG Streamclip comes with a very useful explanatory guide in pdf format.
If you decide to give it a try and need any further help then please feel free to send me a PM.
Good luck!
🙂
