Hi all, just wondering how you ladies went about getting po boxes. When I went to the post office, they told me they required 2 forms of id with valid address on each (one had to be picture, the other had to be car title or lease for apartment). Now, since I’ve moved a lot in the past few years, not all of my ideas are current (joys of being a college student). So I asked my friend to get one for me and just put me down as being able to pick up mail from the box. Well, they told her I would still have to come in with 2 forms of id and that all the mail would need to be addressed with one of our valid legal names.
I just don’t see that as being an option in this venture. I’m more than happy to use my nickname, which is what I’m using anyway, but my full legal name is not a good choice. Have any of you run into this situation before? I want to be able to accept concealed cash or money order as well, but am stuck right now.
The guy at the post office said that they sort the mail by name, not po box number, which sounds kinda odd, but he gave a real hard time about needing business documentation for even a seller name on ebay!
Should I just go ahead and use my real name for the post office and my nickname for stuff to get sent to? I could really use your help on this one, ladies!
Apologies for the length of the email, just wanted to fully explain my situation.

It must be whoever is working I am thinking…

I have had a post office box in the past and had to provide my real name with the two forms of ID as you stated. But they allowed me to add other names to the account and one of those I added was the name I use for online without a problem at all.

Since moving, I ended up getting a box at the UPS store. I met with what you did there but my friend that is using them in Ohio didn’t have a problem using her online name. Which leads me to think that it’s whoever is behind the desk and whether or not they want to be difficult or not.

I haven’t checked into it personally but another camgirlfriend told me that you can file a fictious name or something like that with the city. Which would allow you the use of the name. But I really don’t know more. Perhaps you can google it.?

Now I just use initials to receive mail and it has worked for me. Was gonna at a later time, after they get to know me a wee bit…try and add my online name to the account…maybe you can do the same?

Anyhow, good luck.? A UPS box costs more but it’s great cuz you can call and ask if you have mail and dont’ have to make extra trips which I LOVE! That and the address looks more like a street address as well.

The rules might be different in other areas but when I got my PO Box about 5 years ago, they asked for the two forms of ID that you are being asked for. When you fill out the form, it asks for ‘other names’. That’s where I put my online name (Krooze) and the mail ges to me just fine.

Sometimes the Postal workers say stuff to be difficult. Remember that people get mail to their PO boxes everyday using online nicknames so it is more than possible.

I can’t imagine them sorting by name rather than by box.  Even though I’m in Canada I can’t imagine it’s very different here – I’ve had mail show up for me under a variety of wild and wonderful names, and it all got to me just fine, so long as the PO box # was correct.

Sounds like posties just being a pain in the neck…

I didn’t do that when I got my PO Box (about 8 months ago), though I do use my nickname when receiving “special mail” and I haven’t had a problem yet…

Thanks for all your advice. I’ll try again on Saturday and see how it goes (hopefully the same guy won’t be working!) I thought it sounded really weird that he said mail gets sorted by name and not po number. If that were the case, we’d never get someone else’s mail by accident.

I’ll let you all know how it goes. If it’s still too difficult there, maybe I’ll just try another branch and not even mention an online nickname.

    Thanks much!

it seems to me to be two problems…

to get a post office box, they have to know who you are.

but as most people know, they delover to the address, not the name, because there are so many names that are the same.

so get you p.o. box under your real name and have things sent to it.

it does not matter what the name is within reason.

there are third party po boxes out there, some good some not,

they just want to know who you are in case you really break the law.

Ok, I know I said I would update on Saturday, so I am. I slept late today and got to the post office at 12:15 when they close at noon. Hopefully they’re open and I’ll try on Monday.

I’m confident that I’ll be able to receive mail with just my initials for the time being. Maybe in a few months, I’ll try to send something to my nickname just to see how it goes. I probably just had someone in a bad mood, so I freaked out for no reason.

I looked on the application for names that were allowed to receive mail at the po box, but it requires each name written to show a valid id, so internet names wouldn’t work for that. I’ll just do the initial thing. Thanks for everyone’s advice and help. Promise not to get so worked up over stuff in the future (unless it’s me getting worked up in my panties, hehe).

I was wondering how you made out. I am about to get a PO box myself and wanted to know if I am going to have the same problem.

Sorry for not putting up a current post. But I went back to the post office and fortunately, there was a different guy working. I just gave my info and got signed up. I’ve been able to get mail addressed to my initials  just fine. So, I agree with the posts who say it was probably just a crabby guy that was working before. Good luck to you!

    Kacie,
I went today and signed up and asked if a different name would be a problem and they said no. I explained I was gonna sell things on e-bay and it might not come to actual name but maybe some version of profile/auction name. They said as long as the correct PO Box number was on it shouldn’t be a problem. I live in US BTW. Hope this helps

Thanks. It seems like I’m the only one that has encountered this problem. I think I’ll stick w/ initials just in case they decide to be crabby there some more. It hasn’t posed a problem yet.

Heya Kacie…I have a quick question on the “initials”..in doing this do you have your customers address your mail as (example) “A.B. “Last Name” ” ??..I know this probably sounds silly, but I was just wondering if thats what you were talkin’ about in usin’ initals…Thanks a bunch!!

For initials, I just have them send it to K.P. then my po box.
Hope that clears it up for you.
