What is it with these people who lose their wallet, or their nan dies, or whatever tragedy has befallen them that then compels them to approach strangers and ask for money?

This is how it often goes…’Oh excuse me, gosh what a lovely car/dog/day/whatever*, hope you don’t mind me asking, gosh, I would never normally do this but, it’s just that I’ve lost my purse and I desperately need to get back home before my nan dies/dog dies/budgie dies* and well could I borrow some money…I promise to pay it back, I’ll leave you with my address blah blah blah…

    *delete as appropriate

It’s happening all the time where I live, they knock on my door, approach me when I’m in the garden, accost me when I’m putting the shopping in the car…does anyone else have this or do I just look like a mug, or do I just live in a dodgy town?

The people who do this can appear so genuine that I am momentarily taken in by their plight, they are very good.  One guy even had car keys to a very new car and some tale about the immobiliser broken so he needed to get to next town to get something or other………does anyone know how much cash these parasites can earn?

    Rant over……and breathe……

I saw a programme called the real hustle on the TV, people make loads of money doing this scam its horrible but the TV programme was to show how easy people can be conned and to prevent it from happening, they use props like Vick’s vapour rub under the eyes to make people look like there crying and one girl used a car with a wheel clamp on to make some money out of passes by, she would say she has no money to get it removed she took out 150 pounds of her own money to show to people and make them think that that she was genuine. she was young and pretty so men usually coughed up.

    Fuckers.mad

I’m glad you didn’t fall for it Anna

We’ve had  big problem with fake beggars for years here in the States. The approach your talking about doesn’t work well because people are always mooching a couple bucks off each other here. We toss so much money off to people we know, we have none left for the stranger with a sob story. That or we have no patience left for them.

What they do here is stand on busy street corners in the big cities, dressed in rags, and hold up signs looking for a handout. Investigative news teams here have followed many of the ‘poor souls’ when they knock off for the day to find them going around the corner to a late model car and driving home to a nice house in the suburbs.

My boss loves to take an extra sandwich and some fruit with him when he goes into the city to make deliveries. He’ll tell one of the beggars that he has no extra money but gives them the food so they can eat. As he looks in his mirrors when he drives off, he usually sees the beggar throw the food in the trash can. Someone really down on their luck would be hungry enough to eat the food.

I think there’s good money in playing on the goodwill of others. It could be worse, they could be working for an investment firm and just take big money from people’s investment accounts… oh wait, they really do that too!!!!!!
