Darn time limits!!!

Ok, I didn’t know where to put this so I put it here. It’s not a suggestion but more of a bitch! I logged into PHOG this morning before work, checked for messages and caught up on the forums. I always do that stuff while doing other things in other windows. I’m a regular multi-tasker! 😉

Anyway, I decided I would add a thread in the forums and began typing like a madman. I noticed that I needed to leave for work but I HAD to finish typing up what was going to be an all-time classic PHOG thread! As I proofread the post I kept smiling at my incredible writing skills and I thought that everybody would LOVE what I was saying. Now I surely was going to be late but I had to get this finished!

Damn, what a work of art it was, a little long but a possibly the great American Novella! So I decided I should submit the great post and come home to many replies! As soon as I hit the submit button, my screen filled up with a web page telling me I must be logged in to submit a post!!!!!! YIKES!!!

It seems that while I was typing and typing and typing, the hour that I checked off at log in must have ran out. I was no longer logged in. What’s worse is that I had no way to retrieve the text I had typed! Hitting the back button only resulted in the same screen telling me to log in!

I was pissed! I went to work pissed. I came home pissed. I was pissed when I started typing this post! But I guess by typing this, I got it off my chest and now I feel so much better. In fact, nevermind! I’ll just go type it all back in and see if I’m that damn good and can repeat my masterpiece!

I think there’s a box you can tick that lets you stay logged-in forever.

I’ve lost some great posts the exact same way, but on other sites.  Notepad really is your friend!  🙂

I’m very sorry Krooze. I look as forward to reading your stories as anyone, and even I have been left with the empty feeling that comes with pressing “submit” after writing only to get the logged off note. Karen has a good suggestion about choosing “log in forever” so that you are automatically logged in whenever you visit Panty Hog. Unfortunately, this won’t save you from the situation that you had today. If you or others are interested in knowing why, I’ve explained below. However, I would suggest that if you know you will type a longer item, that you consider typing it first in Word, or another writing program, and than copying and pasting it here. Another trick is to type it here, and just make sure that you highlight, right click your mouse, and select copy before you press submit. This way if you do lose your session, you can just right click and paste it right back without losing it.

Semi-technical explanation:
When you log into Panty Hog, three things happen. The system acknowledges that you are logged in which unlocks the ?doors? to allow you to post and visit logged in only areas. Second, your browser picks up a small file (cookie) that tells the Panty Hog system how long you should remain logged in (this time automatically extends in the same increments if your session is still active?more on a ?session? later).  If you choose ?log in forever? than the cookie doesn?t expire, and whenever you come to Panty Hog, the cookie on your computer sends your password/username to the system so you don?t have to. In other words, it should technically be called ?log in automatically every time so I don?t have to? because you aren?t really ?logged in? if you aren?t there. I hope that makes sense.

The third thing that happens (this is what got Krooze today and why logging in ?forever? won?t solve all problems) when you come to Panty Hog regardless of whether you log in or not is that a ?session? opens in the database. Basically, the database is a separate computer from the computer (host server) that Panty Hog is hosted on. That is, a dynamic (always changing) site like panty hog is actually hosted by two computers as opposed to one as with most common ?static? web sites. The host sever holds the basic shell (photos, layout, etc.) of Panty Hog, while the database (server 2) holds all of the content such as text. Anyway, when you visit, and a session is opened for you on the database, your computer ?plugs into? the database. There are many reasons why you don?t want people to be able to keep a constant, active connection to the database. Major reasons are related to the speed that the site loads, and security. So if no activity is noted on a session after a set amount of time, the database drops your connection. The trick is to find the optimal time frame that will keep people from getting frustrated by being dropped too quickly, but still disconnect idle or evildoer  :rolleyes: computers before they cause problems or slow downs. I?m not going to say here exactly where I have set the session ?drop if idle time limit? for security reasons, but it is long enough for the average Joe to get a cup of coffee, stop by to greet the Duke, flush, and come back. I have adjusted the session time upwards since we started, and would be happy to give it a little longer if many folks are having trouble.

First, there’s no reason to be sorry. I know all about using notepad or selecting the post text and doing a copy BEFORE submitting. I was just in a hurry and it’s all my own fault.

I won’t do a log in forever in the off chance that someone(family) gets into my computer and then I would have no secrets! 😉

Thanks for the great explanation of the working of the forums. I had to read slow and read it a few times but it was very educational!

All I can say is keep up the good work. You’re doing a great job with the site and I appreciate my time here at PHOG!

That and the fact that if you aren’t logged in, you can’t see the galleries.  :laugh: You’re only seeing about half of the actual new signups though, the other half don’t show because they haven’t clicked the email activation link so their accounts are in limbo.  mad (banging head on desk).

Just for PK could all you new signups click the link in your email inbox and check your spam filtered folder for the activation link .. that’s all it takes to activate your new super duper membership to the hottest site on the net .. come on folks you DO NOT want to miss the galleries trsut me!

Hi … Now I hate to be the bitter bearer of bad news PK .. but I always choose to log on forever, at least twice now I have been kicked off the system and I too have lost messages that I was in the middle of typing (*thank heavens for notepad – I learnt that lesson quick).

I wasnt going to mention it, but now Krooze had a similar problem, maybe the “log in forever” means log in “for ehour” :cheer: … sorry – but maybe it might just need a tweak .. its happened to me 2 or 3 times in the last 2 weeks.  :unsure:
