Hi All,
As I mentioned previously, the auction area is for members, and I want to make sure that it functions as members desire. Therefore, I am asking for Panty Hog member input on a policy not yet addressed; bid retraction.
In the week the auctions have been open, we have had one member retract two bids. The first retraction explanation dealt with an inability of the seller and bidder to agree on payment method. Since the seller didn’t indicate accepted payment methods in her auction, I consider that a reasonable reason for a retraction. His second retraction however came with the explanation that he decided that he wanted to buy from a “smaller seller”. Plenty of photos in the auction listing so this one’s possibly pushing abuse of bid retraction in my mind. However, I’m asking for input from members. Do we want limitations on bid retractions, do we need to define acceptable reasons for bid retractions, should we boot/suspend members from the auction area that break the policy, should it just be a free-all for bid retractions? BTW Bid Retraction happens before the auction closes, after the auction closes, a bid retraction would be considered dead beating.
What do you think?

September 5, 2006 at 9:09 pm #9998AnnaMemberdead beating?
September 5, 2006 at 9:27 pm #9999AnnaMemberThere needs to be some limitations to bid retraction or defined accepted reasons for bid retractions or the auctions will be a joke at best, a farce otherwise.
Once you bid you should stick to it. I would agree with the first bid retraction you did but only because the site is new. A seller is responsible in making sure her payment options are available to view but also a buyer is responsible to check her options and if they are not on view he should ask before bidding!
Retracting your bid because you want a ‘smaller seller’ is taking the piss, it’s a complete abuse of the process, a waste of everyone’s time.
I’ve been eBaying for years and never felt the need to retract a bid. Apart from typing in $1000 instead of $10 what other reasons could there possibly be?

dead beating? :huh:Winning an auction and not paying for it. Someone that does this is a ":cheer:eadbeat”.
Thank you for your input Anna. You’ve probably guessed that I agree with you on the the retractions business. However, I’ll set it up as members request. How about some more thoughts from other members?

September 5, 2006 at 11:03 pm #10007Delicious_JessMemberThat’s a toughie PK. I agree though with capping the amount possibly. Just as the guys don’t want to be taken for a ride nor do the girls and both deserve that mutual respect. If they appear to be a piss taker like the one you obviously had then I think they should be booted.
Circumstances will need bid retraction at times and it’d be ashame to take it away from the genuine users. If you do then they just won’t pay anyway. That last reason isn’t acceptable though. A person like that shouldn’t have the honour of using the place full stop.
Don’t ebay have a time before the auction ends that beyond you cannot retract? That seems good to me. Bid retraction after the end of auction is an insult to the girl and the runner up in my opinion.

When you fill out the auction form, you have to check what payment option you are going to use.So how come they couldn’t agree, when the payment option is obvious:huh:If you bid by mistake or something then i think you should be able to retract-AT THAT MOMENT!!!!
If you change your mind after a day or so..because you have changed your mind..then it’s your loss!!!! Boot the looser :uglystupid2:September 6, 2006 at 3:34 am #10012MiamiMemberI am a huge bidder for stuff on ebay and I like the way their program is set up! I have copied thier retraction rules below… I have retracted my bids on ebay 2 times in the past 6 months due to the first reason, sometimes we have fast fingers and make mistakes…. The Accountability part of ebays rules is what I appreciate the most 🙂
Ebays Retraction Rules:
There are only 4 reasons you can choose to retract you bid:1.You made a typographical error and entered the wrong bid amount. For instance, you bid $99.50 instead of $9.95.
If this occurs, re-enter the correct bid amount immediately after you retract your bid. If you do not place another bid, the retraction will be in violation of eBay’s policy and could result in your suspension.2. The description of an item you have bid on has changed significantly.
3.You can’t reach the seller. You have tried emailing a message to the seller and it comes back undeliverable.
4.Someone has bid on an item using your User ID and password.
Timing Matters
There are special rules about retracting bids, depending on when you originally placed the bid.
If you place a bid before the last 12-hours of the listing: You may retract that bid before that last 12-hours, if your situation meets the above description of exceptional circumstances. You will not be allowed to retract that bid during the last 12-hours of the listing.
When you retract a bid before the last 12 hours of a listing: you will eliminate all bids you have placed on that item. If you are correcting a bidding error, you will have to bid again.
If you place a bid during the last 12-hours of the listing: You may retract the bid only within one hour after placing the bid (and if your situation meets eBay’s exceptional circumstances description).
When you retract a bid within the last 12 hours of the listing: You will eliminate only the most recent bid you placed. Bids you placed prior to the last 12 hours will not be retracted.
If you are not allowed to retract your bid during the last 12-hours of the listing, you may contact the seller to request that your bid be canceled. The seller will have the discretion whether to cancel your bid.
Accountability
Your total number of bid retractions in the past six months is displayed in your member profile.
eBay will thoroughly investigate bid retractions. Abuse of this feature may result in the suspension of your account. Bids retracted within the last 24 hours of listing can be viewed as bid shielding, which is a serious violation of our policy.
Note: There is no equivalent for bid retraction in Buy It Now listings. Once you’ve confirmed your purchase, you are obligated to pay the seller

September 6, 2006 at 7:03 am #10015AnnaMemberGood one Miami – If it’s been tried and tested by ebay and it works for them why re-invent the wheel?
September 6, 2006 at 9:52 am #10016mikegukMemberLike most here, i too am very active on ebay and not once have i found the need to retrack any bid i have place. The reason why i haven`t is because i READ all the information on the item before bidding and if i still not sure i email the seller! Simple and quick.
September 6, 2006 at 1:56 pm #10018Kinky KateMemberYup, I agree, why reinvent the wheel. Will bid retractions show on the auction users profiles? I think that would go a long way to discourage willy-nilly bid retractions. If people read all the listing before bidding, & email the seller to clear up any questions, there should never be a need for bid retraction, other than typos & those could be fixed immediately. -KK
September 6, 2006 at 5:40 pm #10021jazzyMemberI think only genuine mistakes should be retractable as i once bid £99.99 instead of £9.99,as most bids were £7-£9 it was an obvious error.
It is unfair to all sellers if you put in a genuine bid and then withdraw.
As was said earlier ,do read all details and bid and enjoy the fun.
just a thought. :coolsmiley::laugh: Jazzy
