A customer has asked if he can pay via MoneyGram, however I am guessing that MoneyGram does not accept adult payments…I cannot find information on their site.

If someone could confirm my suspicions, I’d be truly grateful.

    Hey PP
just had a quick look at their site as I never heard of it and got curious!
I couldn’t find anything obvious that suggested adult transactions are not allowed.
But it is a scarily corporate site/company!!!   … personally I would be cautious…

I’m sure you’ll get more significant replies

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with moneygram as a company, they seem legitimate enough what with being able to make transactions at the post office etc.  There fees seem quite high though so I’m surprised a buyer would request to use them (unless they expect the transfer fee to come out of the payment which means you lose out).

I don’t see anything in their terms and conditions saying they don’t accept adult payments.  But as they’re a money transfer facility and not a payment processor as such I suppose they don’t mind.

My biggest concern is that once you have the transfer reference you then have to go to a moneygram point to collect the money and you have to take ID and fill out a form.  They seem to ask for a passport or driving license and proof of address.  I’d be concerned that the buyer might have access to that information.

I have just taken payment from a client by Western Union which seems to be similar. It has worked as I get cash rather than gift certs but you have to give the buyer your exact full name to pay it too or else the cashier won’t release.

I gave the client my name as Vicky, but they wouldn’t pay me as my licence says Victoria!!!  mad

Huummm, ok.  I need to look into both of these companies more closely.

The client did suggest either Western Union or MoneyGram.

This might prove a problem as I know the company is US based, and I live in the UK.  I’m not sure if the same applies for Western Union. Or can you pick up payment from a Post Office? (Although queues at UK post offices are not my idea of fun!)

I have no problem giving my full name, but the address causes a slight problem, esp if this can be viewed by the sender.

It all seems a bit complicated, and as I’m really fairly new to this business, I’m gonna have to do a lot more research.  For the moment though, I think I’ll stick to my guns and go with the payment options I suggest.

I think the moneygram points are all over the world.  In the UK you can collect the money at a post office, Thomas Cook, or anywhere you see the moneygram sign.  I just don’t like the idea of giving out such personal details though.  In this business you’ve got to put your safety first.

As for western union I think it’s pretty much the same process.  I’ve never used either though so I can’t be certain.  I’m just going by the info on the websites.

I think you would be wise to stick to the options you’ve already suggested though.  It’s a shame we’re limited to online gift vouchers from our overseas buyers.  It would be nice if more companies offered the service, I can only find amazon, hmv and firebox.

    Girls,
I can`t comment on money grams, but i`m still looking into setting up a PO box of my own that you girls (UK based) could use. Thought it, i would be able to offer you the use of it for any cash payment/gifts for you items.
As and when i get it sorted, i will post here and on my blog about it. Then any UK seller can contact me and we can talk about the details for you to use it.

Ok, there seems to be Western Union places all over, you just probably don’t notice them – they are a black and yellow sign with a crown on I think.

Anyway, I gave my buyer my full name and city where I live, so thats pretty random & very safe if they are abroad anyway.
They pay the money in and give me a collection number.

I go to the WU office and fill in a form, I think my full address was on it and show my id.
They give the money and send the form to HQ, so I don’t think the sender sees anymore details than you give originally – name & city.

I feel, in any case, if this is used for an overseas buyer, there is precious little chance of them arriving on your doorstep. But I don’t think they have any access to the details.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

I went to Western Union to collect money today and grilled the clerk, God only knows what she thought I was up to!!!
Anyways, the buyer will never see my address details, and equally, they will never disclose his to me, so it is totally safe for all parties.
The Buyer (sender) has to pay the charge at their end, and that goes on the amount to be sent. And, it is better for them (cheaper) if it isn’t accessable instantly, 12 hrs access is cheaper  🙂

Hope this helps and I do recommend!!!

    It’s surely viable dear,
but buyers are not really happy to use it, as seen as they have high fees to pay, anyway I use it too in some cases 🙂
