Regarding Karma

Hi All,

I have the forum mod pretty much ready to go that would show

• the username of the person who added +/- karma
• an explanation for the +/- karma

However, we’ve had some email asking us to take the karma off entirely, or to combine it into one number i.e. user has 25 karma points showing, someone smites them, their karma then shows 24.

We can do any of these things. Please vote in the poll so that I can get an idea of what most people want done. As always, you can also reply to this post with more information regarding your thoughts (but you should still vote).

I voted for “left as is but with username and reason”.  It’s nice to see both the karmas and the smites, just because a rating of 1 could be 1 karma and 0 smites, or it could be 100 karma and 99 smites.  :cheer:  Nosy people like me want to know!  :laugh:

Im with Karen on this one 🙂 .. if you really deserve to be smited then at least you can see the reason behind it.  It would be a shame to remove the whole thing completely just because of a few asshats out there who are just plain nasty.

I don’t mean to be the odd one out here (but why change the habit of a lifetime) but why have a smite button at all? People only get upset if someone uses it so no one can reasonably use it, right? No one can smite a regular (hey, I’m being honest here, it happens) because they’ll get bashed themselves, so that just leaves the controversial newbies. Can you imagine if I smote Cindy for what I thought was a damn good reason? Oh my god, I’d be THE most unpopular hogger ever!! (wink at Cindy  ;))

If someone gives a description of why they smote that person; for example “I smote Jess because she moans too much and talks crap” then it’s down to you guys to decide whether that’s justified, so that persons smote/opinion stands for nothing. The recent smoter may have had a good reason in his/her mind to issue what he did. It is impossible for you guys to see it from his POV so it was seen as trouble stiring. But with positive it’s different. You can’t say I’m removing that applaud because I don’t agree that Jess’s new gallery pic deserves a plus. You get me?

I’m going to be awkward and say ditch the smite altogether and keep the place all happy and perky  🙂 If someone dislikes what you say either ignore it or reply.

I guess it all comes down to how adult we all are here… as we have seen we do have some very immature spiteful people here hiding at panty hog and I think the main reason behind changing the karma set up is to try and not give these individuals a chance to ruin a happy atmosphere.

As for someone smoting/smiting me – hey if they had a damn good reason, which in some of my rant posts I half expected to be smote, then I dont have a problem with it – its when someone does it for no reason .. like with Karen … wtf did she do?? Maybe PK could even add another option for the person who has been smoted to be able to add a comment under the comment left by the smoter ?? So at least that person can defend themselves.

However, in all honesty, smoting should only be used in extreme cases in which so far *touch wood* we havent had anyone like that on here who really honestly deserved it.

Sometimes the best plan of action never goes to plan, so maybe if we just give it a go and if it dont work then PK can remove the whole thing altogether?!?

Jess I do agree with you that if someone does have a personal problem with another user then we dont want it in the forum. Im not talking about rip off sites because they deserve what they get, but Im saying that any personal issues or personal bad feelings towards another member of the community should be dealt with privately and not brought in here to taint the happy atmosphere.

Let’s face it. Smiting isn’t there to make you feel good is it?? So of what purpose is it? To bash peoples posts you don’t agree with, because you dislike them in general, because they disagreed with your fav panty gal, because they’ve said something you disliked before and you’ve only just noticed the smite button a few weeks later? With that in mind there can be no good result even with a comments system. A disgruntled buyer will smite seller and she’ll smite the guy right back. Everyone moans…etc, etc….no happy endings here even at best. 99% of us will be adults but 1% will win because they cause the most offence.

There’s no rules on smiting so I’m not sure how it can be decided what’s justified and what’s not so it’s all down to personal opinion. I think the smite/applaud thing started out as a bit of fun, now you couldn’t playfully smite someone. Can I smite you and see Cinds?  :cheer:  I think I’d do a Karen/Chandie and giggle if someone was to smite me, and no, that isn’t an invitation to smite me people!!  😛

Mr PK sir, I’m not bashing your hard work here, just a thought from a different angle 🙂 What’s the world coming to when a simple + – system has a thread of it’s own?

I can see Jess’s point…  But I sort of like the smite option there because it “balances” things…  Rather than only have a positive option (“yay, yay, we’re wonderful”) we also have a corrective option (“stop it, you’re being a dickhead.”)  I could see myself using the smite function to say, “dude, that comment was out of line”.

Things at PHog are mostly (i.e. 98%) good…  But that doesn’t mean we should obscure any of the unpleasant things (at the very least an unjust smite will generate discussion and communication.)

I originally voted keep it as it is but have comments…

But I’m kinda leaning towards Jess’s viewpoint now. If you’re going to have to give a reason if you smite someone, then why not just post that reason as a balanced and adult argument in response to whatever pissed you off in the first place? I dunno. Maybe it makes no difference.

The thing with the smite is it can’t be retracted. But if two people disagree in a discussion, there’s no reason why it can’t end amicably.

Whatever. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of falling out in here, unlike some other , erm, “adult” forums. I hope that doesn’t change as it gets bigger. And to clarify falling out, I mean bitchiness and sniping. Not to be confused with healthy debate involving different viewpoints.

Have I rambled enough? I think so 🙂

Im pretty sure that the negative karma slate was wiped clean.  The good thing is that whatever PK decides to change it isnt necessarily for ever and can be changed again.

It is just such a big shame there is always, always a couple of spiteful nasty individuals so fuelled with jealousy and hatred that have to ruin it for everyone else trying to have some fun.  Surely if someone has that much of a problem with another, it can be battled out using the Private Message system or alternatively, if its not going to flame anyone, then perhaps it can be openly discussed here on the forum?

The underhanded way in which certain people try and smite or downrate others or even stoop so low as to manipulate their rankings on various sites, just shows their own weaknesses and insecurities!  These people are obviously feeling very threatened by their own inadequacies.

They probably get some sort of smug pleasure in trying to bring others down to their level .. hahaa ….but  it doesnt work does it – it just makes these individuals look even more inadaquate, desperate and a total failure!

Thing is with real Karma .. it does have a way of coming back and biting you on the bum, so if you want to have good luck and a happy life then try being nice – being an asshat, a wanker or a bitch will just cause your karmic balance to be negative all the time, which only brings sadness to your own self – noone else! .. think about it!

I’ve voted to keep the karma + / – but change it to show the username who added the + / – and show a field for an explanation of why.

Like others, I thought the karma function was a bit of fun as a lot of other rating functions were on the Gallery and Stories etc.  I find it sad that a very few feel the need to hit things without giving a reason.

My prediction is the smiting will stop if or when the changes take place; those who smite with the karma rarely have the ‘cojones’ to say things outright and prefer to hide in anonymity.  We live and learn on Panty Hog and PK tweaks things as needed.  I think it makes for a more open forum.

So if anyone has an issue with another member or post, I’d rather see them say so in a PM to the person or as post in reply in the forum.  Of course if the thread gets ‘flamey’ I or one of the other Mods will have no hesitation in deleting the thread.

Lets keep to reasoned and mature points of view, it’s ok to disagree with someone as long as you can see their point of view and respect their right to have it.
