Reinstalling Second Life's New Client

Hi the new software client is now out and has to be downloaded before you can use Second Life.  However, there are a few things to you should do first before downloading the new client to ensure it runs smooth and problem free (problem free said loosely as there are a few bugs with the new client – so its not you its the software!

Question:
How do I completely remove all Second Life files and reinstall?

Answer:
It’s important to clear out temporary Second Life files (such as cache) when reinstalling. Here’s the process:

1) Open c:Documents and Settings(yourusername)Local Settings and delete the contents of your Temp folder.

2) Open c:Documents and Settings(yourusername)Application DataSecond Life and delete the contents of the Cache folder.

3) Uninstall Second Life using the Add/Remove Programs tool in your Windows Control Panel.

4) Visit http://secondlife.com/download and download and install the latest release.

NOTE: If you cannot see the files or folders, go to the Tools menu, choose Options, go to the View tab, and select Show Hidden Files and Folders. Then click OK.

Thank you for this nice explanation. The deleting of the old client procedure may be opitional however if for example you have a problem after upgrading. I have now gone through six upgrades of the client and each time when I go to log in, a popup appears and says that an upgrade is available and asks if I want to install. I click yes, and the upgrade installs and updates what I had already. In other words, I’ve never had to uninstall the old, the new just overwrites it. Have some people been having problems with the automatic upgrade method?

Hi guys
In the SL forum theres talk of quite a few people upgrading from the quick upgrade link instead of uninstalling first so they generally now recommend that everything is uninstalled properly to give a nice clean new copy.

Some people have problems others don’t – I just thought I would post that just in case some people preferred not to take the risk of it muffing up 🙂

Thanks for the heads up Cinds.  We deleted all temp and cache before upgrading but didnt re-install as before we read your post Outsider had already upgraded without re-installing and we didnt have any issues.  I have heard others on different graphics cards having troubles and needing to however…Despite that Temp and Cache is definatly important!!!

Between us we had 1.6GB of cache! despite clearing it out regularly… So if SL is running slowly for you guys or your C drive says its running low on space its likely that your cache is running riot 😉

My install seems to have gone smoothly..I didnt delete the old one.

I bet I should clear out my cache though!
