MemberI got a reply to a local ad I had placed, offering to buy the item (not panties)and pay express shipping to Nigeria. This all totaled almost $500, and seemed like an obvious scam… but he wanted to use paypal.
I asked for his pp address to send an invoice, but shucks, he didnt reply 😉
Anyway, I was wondering, has anyone seen this and how does it work? If someone pays you with a fraudulently funded account, are you responsible for repayment? Or is there something else about this that I am missing?

MemberBasically the PP transaction is made with a stolen credit card, when PP finds out they do a ‘charge back’, meaning they take the money back from your PP account or bank.
PP does not accept any responsibilities for allowing their clients to use stolen cards.
Its becoming a fairly popular scam!

MemberThats what I figured… it just seemed like there must be something more sinister, as all he would be getting from me is an old PS2!

MemberNigeria is a hotbed for scams whether they are postal or online. Don’t touch them with a bargepole.

MemberI am definitely thinking don’t use paypal full stop! I sold a few amazon gift certificates on ebay a while ago, I have done this lots of times before and never had any problems. The winning bidder paid me through Paypal and I transferred the money from Paypal to my bank account and then emailed the certificate codes. I mistakenly thought that once the money had been transferred into my account it was unable to be removed again. A few days later, guess what, I got as chargeback as the ‘buyer’ had reported that their card had been used ‘fraudulently’. Paypal wouldn’t cover it under seller protection as there was no proof of postage, and I lost all my money. Great! I still don’t know whether the card was used fraudulently, or whether the ‘buyer’ just reported that to Paypal and scammed me. Grrrr evil Paypal… Something to think about for sellers who sell their amazon certificates on ebay…

MemberPaypal almost got me evicted. Needless to say, no one should ever use them for any reason.

MemberOuch Anni! 🙁
This might make you feel better..My(other) business lost $10.000 thanks to PP.
We got paid by a man with a stolen credit card, PP froze our account as the amount received was over the limit, by the time they reactivate it (only took 2 months of letters writing, phone calls and faxes, all of which seem to ended up in a vacum somewhere at PP world), the original transaction was retracted and we never got paid.
We tried to take PP to court, but we were told it was a civil case, and we would need legal representation. Having just lost a huge sum of money, that was impossible.
As far as I am concern, PP is ONLY good for fraudulent activities.STAY AWAY!!
