Does anyone know how to catch snakes?
BOTH snakes have managed to escape from their tanks and are currently…somewhere in the house.
I have no idea what to do.

It was a play on that movie title actually. I was going to say something like, ‘Guess what has happened?’
I’ve been counting hamsters all day, they’re still there. Phew.
July 11, 2008 at 5:38 pm #22516adminKeymasterMy dog would kill the snakes pretty fast if they got loose in my house. However, since you said they escaped from tanks, I’ll assume they are pets so releasing the hounds or borrowing a Mongoose (remember Rikki-Tikki-Tavi?) from the zoo is probably not a good option.
If you have heat stones for your snakes you could try putting them out on the floor where you think the snakes are. Unfortunately you’d have to wait until the snakes happened by close enough to the stones to sense the warmth. The again, since it is summer, your house may be warm enough that they aren’t even interested in finding a hot spot.
Hmm…

July 11, 2008 at 8:07 pm #22517AnnaMemberYep…it’s a head scratcher.
If I leave food out the dogs will eat it.
The house is already warm because it is summer.
The snakes are only small, one is 3 foot, the other is only 18 inches, so they can get anywhere.
My house is a huge Victorian terrace with FOUR floors and lots and lots of gappy skirting boards and original floorboards.
The dogs are trained to seek out small furry animals (the escaped hamsters are never loose for long).
I have no idea what the snakes will feed on (probably escaped hamsters).
I don’t know whether I should warn the neighbours on each side.
I suspect the dogs would catch and chew the snakes 🙁
July 11, 2008 at 9:21 pm #22520DesireMemberwhat sort of snakes are they? i would have thought you could catch them with food when they are hungry, its just a case of trying to hide it from the dogs (if it were my dogs the chance would be slim to none!)
as to warning next door, rather you than me! i would hang on a bit and see if i could catch them, some people may freak out if they thought they may wake up with a snake in the bed lol.
good luck, i hope you catch them soon;)

July 12, 2008 at 2:40 pm #22524AnnaMemberI have two corn snakes.
I have a snake house that looks like a boulder with a hole in it. I have put a dead mouse in it so the dogs can’t get it.
Unfortunately the snakes aren’t falling for that ruse.
I’ll just have to wait until I can hear the screams next door 🙁

The reason the snakes aren’t falling for a dead mouse you put in the little snake house is because the mouse is already dead. Snakes need to kill their own food as they devoure it there way.
– I understand your reason for doing what you did though and I wish ya lots of luck catching them soon! -B)– Just being alittle helpful and supportive –
July 12, 2008 at 5:35 pm #22526AnnaMemberSnakes don’t need to kill their own food PRH. Captive bred snakes are brought up on dead mice so they don’t know any different.
It’s illegal in the UK to feed live food like mice or rats, and I wouldn’t do it anyway.

I thought MOST ALL snakes needed to kill there food as they ate it!!
( only was trying to help out the best I could ) 🙂July 12, 2008 at 8:24 pm #22530SerenaMemberAny luck Anna?
You must be getting seriously worried 🙁July 12, 2008 at 10:52 pm #22531DesireMemberhope your getting somewhere with this Anna you must be getting very worried.
PRH a lot of the food you buy is frozen any way so they would not know the difference. the only thing i have fed live is bearded dragons which ate crickets and locus, they would not eat the dead ones they did have to be live. the only way you could get them to eat dead insects is to have a plate that vibrated to simulate them moving lol:lol:
anyway going off track (sorry Anna)
good luck and keep us posted i am sure they will come back soon

July 13, 2008 at 2:28 pm #22535PiercedPantiesMemberEEP!!!
Now, I dont consider myself to be scared of snakes, but having two loose in the house would really freak me out…
How long has it been? Is there any sign of them? I don’t know much about snakes, but maybe finding shed skin (yea, Im pushing for anything that might help lol  ) you could guess where they’ve been.
But good luck catching the little buggars!
