Some clarifications

A couple of questions have come up by email or in Second Life, but I thought they were good questions to answer for everyone. Don’t let this scare you away, I just want to make sure I explain thoroughly!

The money thing. Yes, in Second Life, you sell your panties for Linden Dollars which is the currency used exclusively in Second Life. This isn’t Monoply or “play” money though, real money is converted into Linden money and when you are done with it, Second Life buys it back for US Dollars. Lindens are like any other world currency in that they have a value against the US Dollar. This value is generally 280 Lindens to 1 US Dollar**. So for example, if you wanted $10.00 for a pair of panties, you would price them at $2800 Lindens (10 x 280). When the buyer purchases them from you, you can do a couple of things with the 2800 Lindens you received. You can walk right over to the exchange terminal at the front door area of Panty Hog SL and sell those Lindens back to Second Life and receive $10 US Dollars for them, or you can use the Lindens to buy things in Second Life, pay your store rental, etc.

How to get things/make things do things
Click, click, and click! Just about everything does something or at least gives you information when you click on it. About half the things (like to buy something)require a right click instead of a straight click so if a regular mouse click doesn’t do anything, try a right click. Click, click, click!

It won’t let me build inside Panty Hog
It isn’t personal. There are spammers in SL too. We have set Panty Hog SL so that only members of the Panty Sellers group (you become a member of the group when you rent a store) can build and place objects inside Panty Hog. If we left it open to everyone, the SL spammers would be cluttering up the place with “spam” objects. So this won’t be a problem for store owners. If a guy member has a reason to build inside Panty Hog, just let me know and I’ll turn that permission on for you. Otherwise, just do a search for “sandbox”. A sandbox in SL is a public area where anyone is allowed to build and drop objects, there are many sandboxes around.

When I make a box it just looks like a piece of wood
Yup, now you know why it took so long to put Panty Hog SL together. Everything starts as a piece of blank wood. Luckily for ladies selling their panties and such, most everything you make will just be one simple square that you set for sale. After you drop that box, you then click the “texture” tab. This texture is what makes it whatever it is. A texture is just a photo/image. You get your photos/images into SL by clicking the “file tab” at the top of your screen, and then click “upload image” this will let you upload a photo/image that you have on your computer. This photo/image will now always be available to you to use as many times as you need.

A step-by-step example: You want to put your purple thongs up for sale in your store. Go inside your store, click the “view” tab at the top of your screen. Click “build”, choose the shape (square box, ball, etc.), and then click your wand on the carpet inside your store. You now have a square wooden box in your store. Now click “file”, then “upload image”, find the photo you have taken of your purple thongs and upload it. You can now right click on that box you just made, click “texture”, click the picture of the current texture (default wood) and your inventory will open up. Click on the the name of the purple thong photo you just uploaded. Done, now that wooden box has your purple thongs on it. It is much easier to do than it sounds. Once you do it once, you’ll be able to do it very quickly.

The rental box says 20 prims, what is a prim?
A prim is SL’s version of disk space. Each spot of land is allotted a certain number of prims (or disk space) on the SL server. Each block/box/object you build is one prim. So in your store you can have 20 boxes at a time, or two shelves and eighteen boxes, etc. You should find that twenty objects in your store space is more than enough. When an item is sold, or the auction winner comes and pays for an item, etc. you should remove it from your store giving you space for a new item. To remove an object/item: right click on it and click “take” if you want to take it back into your inventory to use again, or click “more” then “delete” if you just want to delete it. We’ve set it up so that we have extra prim space available, if you need more prims just let me know.

    Help!
Take a look at the sample store that is set up. If you see something there that you want to do, or even have an idea that isn’t shown, just let me know or IM Shannon Nohkan when in Second Life. We’ll be happy to either explain how to do it, show you how to do it, or do it for you. If you have video you want to stream into your store, we will put the video screen in for you, and set it to play your flash/mpeg/WMV/RM/ video.

    What’s that place next door?
Unfortunately, you can’t choose your neighbors. My advice is to stay away from Slots of Fun because there are plenty of better ways to waste your Lindens. If you like to gamble, there are several nice casinos in SL. If you are going to pay money into a slot machine, look for one that at least spins some wheels and dings some bells before swallowing your money.

Sorry to sound like dear old dad, but the best way to get started really is to jump in there, get your feet wet, and start clicking. Seriously, Panty Hog in Second Life is the shizzle so check it out.

**Like every currency, the exchange rate of Lindens to Dollars fluctuates based on the day’s trading volume. The more it is used in a particular day, the higher it goes. Basically, it is stable around 280 Lindens = 1 US Dollar, but it can and does go up and down slightly during the day. The current value is always shown on the Second Life website. It is a good idea to check it out before you sell back your Lindens for Dollars. They might be worth 288 to 1 in the morning, but if you wait until later in the day, you might see the value at 277 to 1. If you priced your item using 280 to 1, but then sell them back when the value is 277 to 1 you’ll actually get more money for the item than you expected.  :knuppel2:
